The Lord God Bird
A lot of conversations with people I’ve recently met invariably include this question: “Where are you from?”
My accent is cited as evidence of being of some far-away drawling place, full of possibly porches, banjos, iced tea, and sunshine filtering through turning leaves. The questions that usually follow my answer, that I am from Arkansas, want an answer like this- but...

Hey! Tumblr! You know what’s really cool? Remembering that you exist.
To celebrate this update, here’s a couple of pictures of the kinds of things my nightmares are made of: Giant spiders.
Completing a Google search for “giant spider” is one of the worst things that I have ever done to myself. Did you know that some fucking spiders can eat birds?
That Must Suck, Right?
My birthday was yesterday; Today I want to share one of the more memorable birthday-related experiences I’ve had.
Guy at gas station, who had just asked for my ID: Oh man, your birthday must suck!!
Me: Um. Why is that?
Guy: It’s three days before 9/11!

Justice Isn't Always Completely Just
After serving 18 years in prison- with one of them on death row and in solitary confinement, no less- the West Memphis 3 have finally been released under a type of “nolo contendre” plea. Having followed the goings-on of this case for quite some time, it finally hit me this evening that I was watching something that I never thought we would be lucky enough to see: Three innocent...

Dylan Ratigan, Mad as Hell: His Epic 'Network'...
megrobertson:
We’ve got a real problem…this is a mathematical fact. Tens of trillions of dollars are being extracted from the United States of America. Democrats aren’t fixing it, Republicans aren’t stopping it — an entire integrated system, banking, trade and taxation, created by both parties over a period of two decades is at work decimating our entire country right now. MSNBC’s Dylan...

1.5-mile stretch that will begin in early August.
I’ve had the pleasure of trying out the new protected bike lanes on Kinzie this week while heading into downtown, and I must say that the sensation of riding a bicycle in traffic with such an increased feeling of safety is a marvelous one.

Proof that I can indeed approach and/or talk to people. Take that, everyone I’ve just simply stared at from across the room before.

Part 2
In the first episode of Stupid Questions, I interview my old friend Fadil “the Marvelous Moroccan” Elmansour. Fadil’s chosen theme was “music that people would think you were deranged for listening to in a musical landscape completely different from our own,” with conversations about everything from bridging cultural gaps to uprisings...

Maybe it’s the booze, and maybe it’s the giant bonfire, or maybe it’s just the thrill of spending so much time in the woods after being locked in steel and concrete for so long, but either way you come back with some crazy ideas about god and the undiscovered capacities of the human brain that sound just so perfect, and you wake up the next day surrounded by concrete again and...

The third Transformers film was shot in Chicago most of last summer. Does anybody remember when they shut down Michigan Ave. for skydivers? Well, thanks to the video above, it turns out they were more like base jumpers than skydivers. Super dope. We can’t imagine what it’d be like jumping off the Trump International. Makes us wanna throw up just watching it happen. Michael Bay’s...

Wherein I Attempt A Dream Job Cover Letter
This was my instant reaction to the news that Ghostbusters III will may but probably will not be filming in Chicago:
To Whom It May Concern:
It is my understanding that your company, Ocean Pictures, is one of the production companies responsible for bringing Ghostbusters III to the silver screen, and that filming will take place in Chicago. It is my mission, as both an avid fan of the...

This is actually a really good article about something that I am in no way surprised by.
I FINALLY DID IT!
I finally launched Jonas & Gabe, my online Etsy shop for all the handmade jewelry I’ve been making. After 5 1/2 months of crafting, 300+ photos, and 2 hours of writing/editing, I’ve finally gotten J&G off the ground.
Now it’s time to sit back and hope somebody actually buys this stuff- though I’d settle for someone even just liking it a little.

Overhead on the Blue Line
Girl #1: So did I tell you that we might get a cat?
Girl #2: Yeah, I think you did.
Girl #1: My roommate wants to get it from PAWS or something. 'Cause they, like, give it all the shots and stuff.
Girl #2: Yeah... where else would it come from?
Girl #1: Well I was thinking a barnyard. Like, a barn cat.
Girl #2: Yeah. I mean, where will the barn cats live?
Girl #1: I know, right?!
Girl #2: Barn cats need homes too.

For Posterity
It was announced, late last night, that Osama bin Laden had finally been killed in combat by US SpecOps. First off, I just want it to be known that I am very glad that it wasn’t this guy to “get ‘em,” but rather, it was this guy:
Second, I do want to discuss the impact that this piece of news had on me. I feel as though I’m a member of a generation whose lives have...
Downtown with Chicago DASH
DASH3 went off beautifully today (at least, that’s what most of the participating teams said- which is good enough for me).
In other news, in my 6 hours spent standing on the same spot along Michigan Avenue, I developed a game wherein I quickly- in a span of three seconds or less- determine whether various passers-by are A) Chicago residents (Yes), or B) Not Chicago residents (No). Owing...

-William McGrath Muders Wife, 1917- from “Rare and Unusual Photos”
On top of a photograph depicting the sheet-covered bodies of William McGrath and his murdered wife, a Denver Post illustrator has drawn what he imagined the act itself to have looked like.
